Dinner’s Done Cooking Classes for Kids and Teens

If you are looking for something fun for your kid or teen to do this fall, check out the Dinner’s Done Cooking Classes for Kids and Teens where students learn how to make a new recipe each week and bring it home to their family. Recipes are the same on Wednesdays and Fridays to support students in different school districts that have different flex school days. However, each week is a different seasonal recipe.

These cooking classes are meant to be eaten right after class, so all sessions end at 5pm on Wednesdays and 4pm on Fridays. The start time may vary based on how long it takes to cook the recipe of the week. Please register for each session you would like your teen to attend.

Cooking Class Experience

Each week students will gather in our classroom to learn the cooking skills required by the recipe of the week while they make enough to bring home for a family dinner. After they are finished they learn the most important skill of all – cleaning up their workstation, including wiping down their equipment and tables, taking out their trash, and sweeping around their workstation. Students do not participate in dishwashing during Covid, but will resume this all-important task when sharing tools is safe again.

During class we review the recipe and ingredients, discuss any skills that need to be demonstrated, then get right into making the recipe all on their own. Most students at this age are capable of measuring their own ingredients and we have some common ingredients at their station. However, there are some that we only have in small quantities, so we have to measure for them. The days of passing the cardamom from one station to another are gone – for now.

Each week we will make a new recipe and you can sign up for as many sessions as you like. Our goal is to not repeat a recipe more than once per school year, unless there’s a demand for more students that have not tried a popular recipe.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to apply the cooking skills required for the recipe of the week. These details are included in each individual session description. In addition, there are some inherent learning bonuses that happen during our cooking classes because they are allowed to have a hands-on experience and learn by making mistakes and messes.

Learning Opportunities include:

  • Food & Kitchen Safety
  • Understanding Recipes via reading comprehension
  • Precise Measurement
  • Specific Cooking Skills by Recipe
  • Following Directions
  • Concentration & Organization
  • Self- Confidence and Self-Worth
  • Courage to try new and hard things
  • Resilience by staying positive and keep going even when things go wrong
